IN MEMORY of MY GRANDDAD, DON DEFINE

Written by Jess. Filed under Feature. 1 Comment.

On Saturday February 27, 2010 my beloved Granddad passed away. It was his decision, he was ready. My aunt Nancy, cousin Lindsay and I all read things we'd written in memory of him, below is my poem. I love him dearly, and truly hope to see him again someday.

Of all the men in all the world

that matter to a little girl

From Dads to Brothers, boys and beyond

there exists a special bond

Between me and a man so strong and wise

who’s been there for me before those other guys

I turned one man so great and wise

into a Granddad for the very first time

He taught me things I’ll never forget

and teaches me things I don’t know just yet

At parks and museums, on trains and even a helicopter

he did so much for his little granddaughter

He was witty and charming, a lively, funny man

he’d put a smile on your face like no one else can

Riddles and rhymes, quotations and facts

“Can we listen to the music without words?” I would ask

A helping hand, a hearty smile

of wit, of wisdom, a man with style

I’ll cherish the 25 years we’ve had together

But if I can accomplish ten percent of the things that you did

that’ll make the world a little bit better.

I love you and I’ll miss you Granddad, love Sica Roo.

Happy New Year

It's 2010. Make it happen this year. resolve

Don't have any ideas? Try this.

I can already tell that 2010's going to be a great year. In 2009, what may go down in history as one of the worst years for many people, Steven and I enjoyed many great successes. I switched jobs twice--the most recent being not just a job, but a career. It feels great knowing that during such a rough patch in the economy I was lucky enough to land such a great position. Steven had a rough year in commercial real estate--but never once were we struggling, for that we are both aware of and thankful for. But he's been in the newspapers and I'm very proud of all the dedication and hard work he assumes every single day. So the new year/new decade brings many unknown successes--for now we're hoping to get into our first owned home, very soon. Fingers Crossed.

Oh yeah. Bally Fitness, I resolve to visit more often.

GO ‘MAD MEN’ YOURSELF

...it doesn't take long, and there is fabulous coctail/elevator music to keep you company. I chose to wear what I typically wear anyway, go sans nose and carry the newspaper instead of the cigarette. Go 'MAD MEN' yourself.

ET, Phone Home

I leared something new today and HAD to share. If you have a remote-controlled car key and happen to lock your keys in the car, just call home. As long as you also have a spare remote key, you can stand next to your car with the keys locked inside it and call someone very far away to unlock your car by holding up their key to the phone. This is radical and I can't wait to try it. Let me know if you've had success trying it as well!

sweet potato french fries

alexia_sweet_potato_fries1We have these Alexia Sweet Potato Julienne Fries for dinner about twice a week, and tonight they're starring as a side dish with some mini-burgers and black beans. Very easy to cook (at only about $2 a bag!) and super duper delicious... I am really looking forward to dinner tonight. Sometimes we season them, but sometimes we don't.

betty draper, equestrian mommaDear Betty Draper:

have that baby already so you can get back in the saddle and inspire my wardrobe!

If I start wearing a helmut, only then will it be over the top.

I'm impatient, so I thought it would be kind of nifty to take something like the web browser's loading screen and freeze it... it makes me tap my fingers anxiously on the desk... "just load already."

These may end up in the hallway, because they aren't too distracting, and you don't need much time to look at them.

1. I love typography.

2. Look what she can do! I'd love a whole wall full of her wares... either a long enough quote or some of her gossip-mag-style quips to range floor to ceiling... yes please.
via stephaniedearmond.com "She uses traditional hand-building techniques to make complex constructions from slabs of clay. The typographic forms she creates are based on her own hand-drawn lettering. Each piece is unique — finished with glazes, vintage ceramic decals, or painted-on black slip".
